About waste management licensing
Any site wanting to receive, dispose or treat waste must hold a valid licence or exemption, as required by the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and the Waste Management Licensing Regulations 1994.
Exemptions require a much higher standard of environmental provision at the outset, including impermeable paving and consented water discharges.
A licence must be surrendered when the site ceases to operate and evidence provided to the environmental regulator that the shut-down is unlikely to cause pollution of the environment, harm to human health or detriment of the local amenity.
