Celebrating our 60th Award

Mayer Environmental is celebrating the 60th award completed by waste management personnel mentored and assessed by its team of A1 Assessors.

Russell Chapman of Great Yarmouth achieved his Operator Competence Certificate on the 20th of March and is deemed competent in End of Life Vehicles(ELV). Russell worked through the following units:

  • Management of the reception of hazardous waste
  • Management of the movement, sorting and storage of waste
  • Monitor procedures to safely control work operations
  • Management of the environmental impact of the activities
  • Management of site operations for the treatment of hazardous waste
  • Management of the transfer of outputs and residues from waste treatment and recovery operations

The ELV site falls into a “Medium Risk Tier” site which require 6 NVQ (Qualification Credit Framework or QCF) units. Sites deemed Low Risk only require four where as High Level require twelve units.  The Environmental Permit Regulations 2007 require that all waste operations name appropriately qualified “Competent” management.

Mayer trained Russell on site which allowed for his day to day tasks to be applied directly to the requirements of the award.  Russell built up his Portfolio of Evidence which was assessed against the WAMITAB NVQ (now QCF) standards.  Through gathering evidence in his day to day activities Russell not only achieved the necessary standard to gain the Certificate but also invaluable experience in environmental impact of the site’s activities.

Continuing Competency Test

As part of the Operator Competence Scheme (that operates only in England and Wales). Russell will need to ensure that his competence is kept up to date. He will need to demonstrate his continuing competence by passing CIWM/WAMITAB Continuing Competency Test before the end of his deemed competency period.  This is a computer based at test centres across the UK. The syllabus and scope of the material test varies from each competency period.  Mayer Environmental also run regular Refresher courses to prepare you for the test. For further information and scheduled training dates please visit our training webpage.

The South

I found the task of being assessed a little daunting at first but now can say that with help and guidance from David I achieved my awards successfully and smoothly.  It’s now easy to join the dots between the legislation and our own environmental & health and safety procedures
